Hi — I'm Steve. I started Ranger Station in 2015 with one candle poured into a whiskey glass, and I still build every fragrance we make.
Which means I have opinions about how you should smell these.
Here's the thing nobody selling fragrance wants to say out loud: I can tell you exactly what's in a bottle, and I still can't tell you what it's going to do on your skin. Two people can wear Santalum and get two different scents out of it. That's not a defect in the formula — it's the whole reason the formula is interesting. A fragrance isn't finished until somebody's wearing it.
So this box isn't a sampler. It's the actual last step of the work, and you're the one doing it.
Take the seven days if you've got them. Rip the whole thing open tonight if you don't. Below is everything in your set, what I put in it and why, and the layering combinations I'd stake the house on.

The Method
01 — Skin, Not Paper
Paper strips tell you what a fragrance smells like. Your skin tells you what it smells like on you, which is the only question that matters. Wrists, neck, inside of the elbow. One scent per day.
02 — Give It an Hour
What you smell in the first minute is the top of the scent burning off. The good part — the sandalwood, the amber, the part that stays with you — takes 30 to 60 minutes to arrive. Judge it then, not at the door.
03 — Stop Smelling It, Then Check
Your nose adapts fast. If you can't smell it anymore, that doesn't mean it's gone. Go do something else for an hour and come back to it. Better yet, ask someone.

Best Seller Set
SMELLS LIKE: sandalwood / ambergris / cedarwood / rose / jasmine
Named for my wife, who co-founded this place. Rose and jasmine up top, but the sandalwood and ambergris underneath keep it from ever reading as a floral. Warm, close, and hard to file under any one thing — which is exactly why it's our No. 1.
SMELLS LIKE: cedar / vanilla bitters / demerara / sandalwood / musk
Vanilla bitters and demerara sugar laid over cedar. It smells like the good bar — heavy glassware, low light, no sign out front. Sweet, with enough wood underneath to stay serious.
SMELLS LIKE: ambergris / sandalwood
Two notes. Nothing else in the way. It's the closest thing we make to your own skin on a very good day, and it's the most forgiving thing in this box to layer with.
SMELLS LIKE: amber / ambroxan / woods / musk
Low, warm, and quietly loud. Ambroxan is the note that makes a fragrance project further than it should, so this one gets noticed at conversation distance and nowhere else. Wear it when subtlety is the point.
SMELLS LIKE: sandalwood / amber resin / iris / leather
Creamy sandalwood with iris smoothing the edges and leather holding the floor. The most polished thing on this list. Wear it when you want to look like you thought about it.
SMELLS LIKE: citrus / patchouli / cedarwood / musk
Citrus opens it; patchouli and cedar keep it from being a throwaway summer scent. Bright and a little defiant. Best before noon.
SMELLS LIKE: bergamot / eucalyptus / fir needle / musk
Cold air and clean laundry. Bergamot and eucalyptus over fir needle — sharp, green, and easy. This is the one for the day you don't want to think about what you're wearing.
New Favorites Set
SMELLS LIKE: amber / jasmine / cedar / smoke
Jasmine and amber walking through smoke. It's the most dramatic thing we make and it earns every bit of it. Not a background scent — don't ask it to be one.
SMELLS LIKE: tanned leather / pine sap / amber / sandalwood
Our best-selling candle, translated to skin. Tanned leather and pine sap sanded down with amber and sandalwood. Smells like a cabin somebody actually lives in.
SMELLS LIKE: ambergris / leather
Two notes, and that's the whole formula. Salt and hide. It's the scent people ask about most and can describe least, which we've decided to take as a compliment.
SMELLS LIKE: iris / ambergris / orris butter / sandalwood
Iris and orris butter over ambergris and sandalwood. Powdery in the expensive sense — cool, quiet, slightly out of reach. It's our newest, and it's the one we're most attached to.
SMELLS LIKE: sweet pipe tobacco / blue musk / clove / amber
Sweet pipe tobacco with clove cutting through it. Smells like the inside of a leather bag that once held something good. Warm without ever getting heavy.
SMELLS LIKE: sandalwood / bergamot / vetiver / smoke
Bergamot lifts it, vetiver grounds it, and there's smoke sitting under the whole thing. Clean and a little dirty at the same time. Deceptively versatile.
SMELLS LIKE: moss / cedarwood / amber / bergamot
Damp moss and cedar with just enough bergamot to keep it from going swampy. Cool, shaded, forest floor. The most classic-smelling fragrance in our lineup.

Layering
Two scents, one skin. This is the part most people skip, and it's the part that turns a set of samples into a signature.
Heavier scent first, lighter scent on top. One spray each. Give the first about 30 seconds to settle before you add the second. And go light on the second one — you can always add.

Sandalwood runs through both, so they lock together instead of arguing. Santalum down first, Speakeasy over the top — the vanilla bitters and demerara land like a finish on the leather. Cold weather, evening, no notes.
Two bright scents that stay bright. Smooth Operator's bergamot and fir needle sharpen High Horse's citrus opening, and the patchouli underneath keeps the whole thing from evaporating by lunch. Your warm-weather daytime combination.
Two Trick Pony is an amplifier — ambroxan pushes whatever you put on top of it further out into the room. Spray it first, then Jordan's Perfume. The rose and jasmine get louder and last longer without getting any sweeter.
From the New Favorites Set
Cowboy is only two notes, which makes it a near-perfect base. Lay it down first, then Lady Luck. The leather grabs the smoke, the jasmine sits on top of both. Big, and completely unapologetic about it.
Sweet against damp. Oakmoss cuts the tobacco's sugar and drags the whole thing out into the woods. Tobac + Musk first, then a light hand with the Oakmoss — this is the one combination you want to underdo.
Both are built on a sandalwood base, so the foundation is already shared. Sandalwood + Bergamot brings the citrus lift Runaway doesn't have on its own, and Runaway's orris butter softens the smoke. Our favorite pairing in the box, and the one nobody sees coming.
